Strategy to Answer Listening Test In TOEFL

                                                               

The first section of the TOEFL test is the listening test (Listening Comprehension). This listening section generally consists of 50 questions. You will hear the recording in English and you have to answer questions related to the tape. You should hear the tape as much as possible, because the tape was played only one time and the recording material is not written in the test book.

There are three sections in the listening test :

1.      Part A : In this section, we shall listen in "Short Conversation" where there will be two speakers, one question is usually only given for one matter and for that we should focus on the 2nd speaker. Topics to be told in general is a topic that concerns about academic life/everyday.

2.      Part B : In this section, we shall listen in “Long Conversation" where there will be more than 2 speakers, the question at once and usually in the form of questions about the main idea, restatement (repeated questions), information, inference (conclusion) location, etc. Topics to be told in general is diverse topics.

3.      Part C : In this section, we shall listen in "Small Talk/Lecture" in which there would only be one speaker at a time that the question is also given. Type the same questions as in Part B of the form of the main ideas, restatement ( repeated questions ), information, inference ( conclusion ) location, etc. The topics described in this section is a short narrative that typically tells the story of science, North American History, government / geography, art and literature, biographies of famous people.

A common strategy is to know the TOEFL listening test section:

1.      Be familiar with the directions.

You must usually with direction to answer TOEFL test because general of directions are same.

2.      Listen carefully to the conversations and talks.

You have to really concentrate to hear what the speaker on the tape because it was played only once.

3.      Easier and know where the more difficult questions are Generally found.

Keep in mind that in every matter of listening difficulty level increasing.

4.      Never leave any answers blank on your answer sheet.

Never empty your answer sheet. In TOEFL test doesn’t have reduction score although the answer is incorrect. You must completed answer sheet.

5.      Use any remaining time to look ahead at the answers to the questions that follow.

When you have answered no.1 for example. Hurry up to see choices in the next number so you  can quickly read the the topics to be discussed. By looking at the answer choices before hearing the conversation at least you'll get a imagination about question will appear.

SPECIALIZED STRATEGY TO ANSWER EACH PART IN LISTENING TEST

PART A

1.      At the time you listen to a short dialogue, focus on the second person. In general, there is an answer to what is said by the second.

2.      Keep in mind that the correct answer is a restatement with a different pronunciation.

3.      If you can not understand the dialogue perfectly, you still have the possibility answer correctly. If you do not understand at all what is heard, choose the answer that sounds most different. So do not choose an answer because it sounds a lot same with what you hear.

4.      When finished answering a number, look at the answer choices for the next number. This will make you better prepared. You are only given 12 seconds for each question.

5.      There must be no blank answers. Wrong answer will not reduce the score

PART PART B & C

1.      If you have time, preview choises to guess the topic and answer questions.

2.      Note / listen to the conversation at the beginning because it contains topics . The topic often ask.

3.      At the time you listen to, read also the answer choices in the book at the same time. This is because the answers are arranged in order.

4.      The correct answer usually has the same sound .

5.      There must be no blank answer even if you do not know the correct answer.

6.      Use the remaining time to look at the answer choices for the next number.

Example Listening Test :

Part A : Short Conversations

Merry : Hi Bob , do you bring my English book ? I need to finish my homework tonight.

Bob : Oh , sorry. I forget to bring it.

Narrator : What does the man ( Bob ) mean ?

A. The man Forgets to bring the book.

B. The man does not know about the book.

C. The man brings Merry 's book.

D. The man does not remember to bring the book.

The correct answer is D (The man does not remember to bring the book). Key words in the answer is forget. Then you have to look for another answer which means the same as the word forget that does not remember.

Part B : Long Conversation

Directions
In Part B, you will hear longer conversations. After each conversation, you will be asked some question. The conversations and questions will spoken just one time. They will not be written out for you, so you will have to listen carefully in order to understand and remember what the speaker says .

When you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your test book and decide which one would be the best answer sheet, find the number of the problem and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen.

Woman : I hear that Paul Schmidt has written a new novel.

Man : Yes , it's a science fiction piece called martian Renaissance.

Woman : Sounds intriguing. What's the plot like?

Man : It deals with a five -man, one-woman crew on a three - year mission to Mars.

Woman : Is their mission successful?

Man : Erll, in some respect it is.They have a series of incredible adventures once they land.

Woman : Do they meet any real Martians?

Man : You'll have to read the book to find out.

1 . What is the name of Paul Schmidt 's new book ?

(A) The incredible Adventures of the Martians.

(B) Mission to Mars.

(C) Martian Renaissance.

(D) Captivating tales of Mars.

The correct answer is (C), as described by the man in the following conversation : "Yes, it's a science fiction piece called martian Renaissance". Choice (d) is clearly wrong, while the answer choices (a) and (b) have the same meaning, but the option is not present in the conversation.

2 . What type of bookisit ?

(A) Science fiction

(B) Adventure

(C) Biography

(D) Documentary

The correct answer is (A), as described by the man in the following conversation : "Yes, it's a science fiction piece called martian Renaissance". Answer option (c) is clearly wrong, while the answer choices (b) and (c) have the same meaning, but the option is not present in the conversation.

Part C : TALK

(narrator) Listen to an instructor talk to his class about painting.

(man) Artist Grant Wood was a guiding force in the school of painting known as the American
regionalist, a style reflecting the distinctive characteristics of art from rural areas of the United States. Wood Began drawing animals on the family farm at the age of three, and when he was thirty - eight of one of his paintings received a remarkable amount of public notice and acclaim. This painting, called "American Gothic, "is a starkly simple depiction of a serious couple staring directly out at the viewer.

Now listen to a sample question.

1 . (narrator) What style of painting is known as the American regionalist ?

In your test book, you read :

(A) Art from America's Inner Cities

(B) Art from the central region of the United States

(C) Art from various urban areas in the United States

(D) Art from rural sections of America

The best answer to the question, "What style of painting is known as the American regionalist ? " is (D), "Art from rural sections of America. " Therefore, the correct choice is (D).

2 . (narrator) What is the name of Wood 's most successful painting ?

In your test book , you read :

(A) " American Regionalist "

(B) " The Family Farm in Iowa "

(C) " American Gothic "

(D) " A Serious Couple "

The best answer to the question, "What is the name of Wood 's most successful painting ?" is (C), "American Gothic."Therefore, the correct choice is (C) .

Mengerjakan Soal TOEFL Listening


Sesi pertama dalam tes TOEFL yaitu tes kemampuan listening (Listening Comprehension). Sesi listening ini umumnya terdiri dari 50 soal. Anda akan mendengar rekaman dalam bahasa Inggris dan Anda harus merespon atau menjawab soal terkait dengan rekaman tadi. Anda harus mendengar rekaman tadi semaksimal mungkin, karena rekaman itu hanya diperdengarkan satu kali dan materi rekaman tidak tertulis dalam buku tes.

Listening diakui para pelajar yang telah mengikuti tes TOEFL merupakan sesi yang tersulit dibanding Structure and Written Expression dan Reading dalam tes PBT (Paper Based Test) TOEFL. Olehnya sebelum Anda mengikuti tes TOEFL yang sesungguhnya disarankan untuk mempersiapkan diri pada materi-materi terkait TOEFL Listening. Tulisan ini diharapkan mampu memberikan Anda sedikit tips dalam mengerjakan TOEFL Test (Listening).

Ada tiga sesi dalam tes listening ini:

1. Part A: Pada bagian ini, listening yang akan kita dengarkan adalah “Short Conversation” dimana akan terdapat 2 pembicara, satu pertanyaan yang diberikan biasanya hanya untuk satu soal dan untuk itu kita harus fokus pada pembicara ke-2. Topik yang diceritakan pada umumnya adalah topik yang menyangkut tentang kehidupan akademik/sehari-hari.

2. Part B: Pada bagian ini, listening yang akan kita dengarkan adalah “Long Conversation” dimana akan terdapat lebih dari 2 pembicara, pertanyaannya sekaligus dan biasanya pertanyaan berupa tentang ide utama, restatement (pertanyaan ulang), informasi, inference (kesimpulan) lokasi, dll. Topik yang diceritakan pada umumnya adalah topik yang beragam.

3. Part C: Pada bagian ini, listening yang akan kita dengarkan adalah “Small Talk/Lecture” dimana akan hanya ada 1 pembicara yang pertanyaannya juga diberikan sekaligus. Jenis pertanyaan sama seperti di Part B berupa tentang ide utama, restatement (pertanyaan ulang), informasi, inference (kesimpulan) lokasi, dll. Topik yang diceritakan pada bagian ini adalah berupa narasi pendek yang biasanya bercerita tentang science, North America History, government/geography, art and literature, biographies of famous people.

 

Strategi umum yang harus diketahui dalam sesi tes listening TOEFL:

1. Be familiar with the directions.
Terbiasalah dengan petunjuk-petunjuk dalam mengerjakan tes TOEFL karena umumnya petunjuk dalam mengerjakan soal itu sama. Dalam tes listening akan ada petunjuk mengerjakan soal listening yang diperdengarkan melalui tap recorder sebelum tes dimulai. Olehnya, petunjuk mengerjakan soal harus diketahui secara jelas sebelum mengikuti tes. Penulis (mohon maaf keluar dari aturan akan tidak bolehnya melihat soal sebelum diperintahkan) menyarankan Anda melihat-lihat pilihan jawaban listening terutama soal-soal awal agar Anda punya bayangan terkait topik yang dipercakapkan.

2. Listen carefully to the conversations and talks.
Anda harus betul-betul berkonsentrasi mendengarkan apa yang dikatakan pembicara dalam rekaman karena hanya diperdengarkan satu kali.

3. Know where the easier and more difficult questions are generally found.
Perlu diketahui bahwa dalam setiap soal listening tingkat kesulitan terus meningkat dari soal ke soal. Olehnya berusahalah semaksimal mungkin menjawab soal-soal yang datangnya lebih awal.

4. Never leave any answers blank on your answer sheet.
Jangan pernah kosongkan lembar jawaban Anda. Dalam tes TOEFL tidak ada penguranagn nilai walaupun jawaban Anda salah. Olehnya, ada baiknya lembar jawaban diisi saja.

5. Use any remaining time to look ahead at the answers to the questions that follow.
Ketika Anda telah menjawab no.1 misalnya. Cepatlah untuk melihat pilihan-pilihan jawaban no. 2 agar Anda cepat membaca isi topik yang akan dibicarakan. Dengan melihat pilihan jawaban sebelum mendengar percakapannya paling tidak Anda akan mendapat bayangan mengenai bentuk soal yang akan muncul.


STRATEGI KHUSUS DALAM MENGERJAKAN SESI LISTENING TOEFL

PART A

1. Pada waktu anda mendengarkan dialog singkat, berfokuslah pada baris kedua (orang yang kedua). Pada umumnya jawaban terdapat pada apa yang dikatakan oleh orang kedua. 
2.  Ingatlah selalu bahwa jawaban yang betul merupakan pernyataan ulang dengan redaksi yang berbeda. 
3. Kalaupun anda tidak bisa memahami dialog secara sempurna, anda masih ada kemungkinan menjwab dengan benar.Jika anda tidak memahami sama sekali apa yang didengar, pilihlah jawaban yang bunyinya paling berbeda. Jadi jangan memilih jawaban karena bunyinya banyak kesaannya dengan apa yang anda dengar. 
4. Setelah selesai menjawab satu nomer, lihatlah pilihan jawaban untuk nomor berikutnya. Hal ini akan membuat anda lebih siap. Anda hanya diberi waktu 12 detik untuk setiap pertanyaan. 
5. Jangan sampai ada jawaban yang kosong. Jawaban yang salah tidak akan mengurangi skor

PART B & PART C

1. Jika anda mempunyai waktu, preview pillihan jawaban untuk menebak topik dan pertanyaan. 
2. Perhatikan/dengarkan percakapan pada bagian awal karena berisi topik. Topik sering sekali di tanyakan.  
3. Pada waktu anda mendengarkan, baca juga pilihan jawaban di buku pada waktu yang sama. Hal ini karena jawaban disusun secara urut. 
4. Jawaban yang benar biasanya mempunyai sound yang sama. 
5. Jangan sampai ada jawaban yang kosong walaupun anda tidak tahu jawaban yang benar.  
6. Gunakan waktu yang tersisa untuk melihat pilihan jawaban untuk nomor berikutnya.

Part A : Short Conversations

Jawaban yang betul adalah D (The man does not remember to bring the book). Kata kunci pada jawaban orang ke 2 adalah forget. Maka Anda harus mencari jawaban lain yg artinya sama dengan kata forget yakni does not remember.
